Crowns

A crown is a dental prosthesis that fits over and around a single tooth. The crown may be present or planned for various reasons. These reasons may include covering and protecting a tooth weakend by a large filling (due to a large cavity), a tooth that has had a root canal, a fractured tooth, etc. Crowns can also be used to cosmetically improve your smile to result in a very natural enhancement.

Bridges

A bridge may be recommended if you’re missing one or more teeth. Spaces left by missing teeth may be unsightly, and may cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces. A bridge is usually two crowns (abutments) on teeth on either side of the space. A crown shape (pontic) fits in the space and is attached to the two crowns on either side. The resulting prosthesis should be a natural looking replacement for your lost tooth or teeth.

Dentures

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. While dentures take some getting used to, and will never feel exactly the same as one’s natural teeth, today’s dentures are natural looking and more comfortable than they have been in years past.

There are two main types of dentures: full and partial. We will help you choose the type of denture that’s best for you based on whether some or all of your teeth are going to be replaced.

With full dentures, plastic base fits over your gums. In most cases, the base of the upper denture covers the palate, while that of the lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe in order to accommodate your tongue. A partial denture rests on a metal framework that attaches to your remaining natural teeth. Sometimes crowns are placed on some of your natural teeth and serve as anchors for the denture.

Over a period of time, your denture will need to be relined, remade, or rebased due to normal wear of the denture and the constant changes that occur in your supporting bone and gum tissue. In today’s dentistry we also have the advantage of using dental implants to anchor your denture firmly to your jaw. While still being able to remove and clean the denture, when in the mouth the denture ‘clips’ onto the implants to secure it in place.
